What does "BB" mean? Blue book? (try not to laugh too hard if I was wrong).
It does at our parish, referring to a hymnal called "Gather".
Is "hymnal" spirit of Vatican II vocabulary - like the word "vibrant"?
Hey - I'm just asking because I don't know. You're the expert.
TH2, I actually do use the term "Blue Book" when talking about the "Breaking Bread With Readings", published by OCP. The book covers are blue, hence my nickname. The other parish in town uses green covers, if memory serves.
I've heard wonderful things about the Gather hymnal. *kidding*
I don't know when hymnals became de rigueur ; some argue that there is a tradition of Catholic hymnody, but most of the hymns in the book are of relatively recent origin (last 150 years or so), and some of the composers are protestant. IMO, the best songs in the book are chant or based on chant.
What I find annoying is when a traditional hymn tune is used with new, stupid "lyrics". Before my organist days, I might started singing the words to a song, then have to stop when the words got silly or heretical. I quickly learned to scan the words before opening my mouth.
"Vibrant": I'd like to put that word in the middle of a target. Where's my rifle?
TH2: Do you also make use of the red Worship Hymnal? My parish down at home has the Blue Gather and Red Worship...
MCK: Not the red hymnal. Our parish uses the blue Gather and the green "Catholic Book of Worship", in which the latter (I think) is published by the Canadian Bishops Conference. Never heard of the red one - probably a publication specific to the States (that's a guess)
