YET ANOTHER Winter Storm Watch......
I'm really excited by this; it's liking getting to watch Dale Earnhardt Jr. crash at Daytona yesterday - looks catastrophic, but no one gets hurt.
This winter has brought unusually severe weather to our part of the country. The South had a rare snow this past week, with Dallas getting over a foot of the white stuff. The Winter Olympics in Vancouver has had several events canceled or postponed because of unusually warm weather.
I don't know what's been happening weather-wise elsewhere on the globe, but I seriously think God is trying to get our attention. We already have plagues (think STD's and the horrible effects from hormonal contraceptives (which cannot be filtered out) in the water supply), earthquakes, volcanoes erupting. What's next - entire countries being annihilated? It's been prophesied, you know. And lest you think Our Lord and the Blessed Mother are referring to "insignificant" countries like Haiti, remember that it could be US.
Perhaps these ridiculous little snowfalls are like a little tap on the shoulder; as we rush to the grocery store to buy our eggs, milk, and bread, let's think about how we'd react to having NO food to buy for an extended period of time. Or a church to attend. Or any way to contact our relatives in case of a disaster.
I'm not advocating hoarding a five-year supply of food; that's not the point of this post. But I believe first and foremost that we must always TRUST in God. And take our current weather as a reminder of how EASY our lives are, and how miserably difficult they could be (as they are in many parts of the world).
Let's meditate on how much He loves us, and how terribly short this life is. Any miseries on this earth are as dust compared to what He has prepared for those who love Him. Oculus non vidit.....

Strange one this year... you guys are getting way more snow than us. Usually works oppositely. And where the hek is Al Gore? Have not heard a peep. Do you know? Perhaps he got lost in the northeast blizzard, and is encased in some snow bank somewhere? Maybe he will reemerge during the spring, after the snowmelt.
Thank you for the meditation. Yours truly complains and complains about many things, but often forgets how good God has been to him. Other suffer much more than myself. When I become aware of this, my little trifles become as... well, trifles.
Wait a sec... Isn't trifles some kind of European dessert?
BUY RAMEN NOW!!!! STOCK UP!! THE SNOW IS GOING TO PILE UP LIKE WHITE MOUNTAINS AND WE WILL ALL STARVE TO DEATH!
... oh, and buy ammo too
TH2: Our radar almost reaches up to your neck of the woods, so by extrapolation I could see we were getting more, and that's just not right. This is the first time in 16 years we've had to put snow tires on the vehicles.
I DO suspect that Our Pal Al will re-emerge eventually, exiting his lonely icy shell with the glistening new birth of spring, gently stretching and spreading his wings as would a new butterfly...."Wait! Al!! WATCH OUT FOR THE BUG ZAPPER.....D'OH! Well, it was beautiful while it lasted, wasn't it?
Trifles...if I liked sugar or chocolate, you might've set off a craving. And in this part of the country a "truffle" means chocolate. Can you imagine ordering that in a fancy-schmancy restaurant and getting fungus instead? Being a shroom fan, I'd totally dig it. (Sorry - can NEVER resist a good pun.)
Anonymous: Buy ammo to shoot up the snow? Or to eat?
SNOWPOCALYPSE! snOMG! SNOWMAGEDDON! It's snOVERKILL! (as the major media outlets have put it to hype up this message from our Heavenly Father)...
BASICALLY.. I'm listening.. because you don't see this EVER: http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs159.snc3/18670_791283045397_12600589_44044975_934544_n.jpg
(Photo taken on 2/13/2010 in Pawleys Island, SC. yes that would be snow leading right up to the Atlantic Ocean)
MCK, that picture is both fabulous and just plain wrong.
It iS NOW time for it to end, doggone it. We're all S(n)O(w) tired of it.
oh ye Southerners. up in the snow belt - this aint nothin'! A couple feet is a regular winter occurance...and perfect for skiing and ice skating - best sports ever as far as i'm concerned! :) (even Pope John Paul II skiied!)
Yank,
You have a point. I've never downhill skiied, just cross-country once or twice, and that's before I knew what warm winter clothes were, so I was miserable!
But I LOVE ice skating. We went a few weeks ago, and it occurred to me while I was skating that it's not the best activity a few months before my junior recital. And I think I ticked off the student handing out the skates; she gave me the crappiest pair on the planet, probably as punishment for overpopulating Mother Earth. :-/ I traded them later, after serious pain, for a much better pair. The damage was already done, though, and I had foot problems for the next week. Used to have my own skates, but a nail came through the boot on my figure skates (ouch!), and I never was comfortable on my hockey skates.
We should go skating next fall (AFTER my recital, haha!)
YES!!!! LETS GO SKATING! :) Nordic excursions are so much fun!
TH2, I have to retract what I said earlier about the radar - I assumed your area wasn't covered because I never saw precipitation there. Until today. Hope you're enjoying it.
Yank - I'm looking forward to it!
Looking out window now, Mary. Light snow flurries. Not much accumulation.
Yank -
Southerners are deprived of LOTS of winter weather activity. The one time we went skiing, it was 60 some odd degrees so there was no powder. We ended up playing laser tag at a random place in Gatlinburg, and pool at the little chateau deal we were at. But no skiing - ever.
Ice skating might be fun - my two experiences with that were in a parking garage one winter - somehow they made a make shift ice rink in Myrtle Beach. I used one of those walker things for a while like a big dork hehe.
I guess when it comes to winter weather adeptness - I got nothin'! Except for falling gracefully on ice without spilling much coffee - that's about it!
MCK - you're coming ice skating with us. Unfortunately, Bird closes at the end of winter quarter (when the golf course opens) and doesn't reopen until the end of September (when the golf course closes).
And Yank, did you see that closing Bird was one of the budget cut recommendations? Happily, it was labeled "difficult to implement". There'd be lots of hockey sticks broken over administrators heads if that happened.
TH2, how much accumulation do you have?
Minimal accumulation. Turned out to be less than 2 cm (which is just less than 1 inch).
